Cat Lovers Serious Question: How Do I Keep My Cat From Killing Me?

When my wife died her cat adopted me. I have to walk with a rollator (walker on wheels) and can fall easily. If I go anywhere the cat has to beat me there sometimes running under the rollator or even between my legs. She has no fear of it. Yesterday I ran over her tail twice accidentally. I thought about carrying a spray bottle around but I don't know if she'd understand. That works fine for keeping away from plants, etc. but I'm a moving target so would it just keep her away from me? I don't want either of us getting seriously hurt.

So sorry your wife died and I’m glad her cat adopted you, you’d be comfort for each other, as cats grieve too.
Spraying water at the cat will only make her nervous of you, as would any punishment and that would be a shame as she obviously loves you and wants to be near you. Punishing cats never works as they don’t understand why you are doing it, to the cat she is doing nothing wrong.
I do understand your plight as my own late mother had problems walking, the cats loved her and would run with her, like your cat does. She just had to walk very carefully keeping in mind that a cat could run and trip her up any second or she could hurt one of them with her stick.
There really isn’t any other solution than being very very careful for your own safety and for hers.
    Sorry.

Don’t know if this would work, but you could put a bike horn on your walker. When the cat gets in your way, honk the horn. Might startle him enough to quit. Then you don’t have to spray the cat.

Cat owners the world over have develop a shuffling walk to save themselves from tripping over their cat and to save the cat from harm. I can only suggest you walk extremely slowly and carefully, looking where you’re placing your feet and not lifting your feet high enough for a tail to get under. My late husband had a similar problem in that he walked with elbow crutches and wasn’t completely steady on his feet, our precious cat used to rub around him while he was walking and he used to say she would kill him too, but he would never ever have punished her by squirting her or anything else because she only did it because she loved him and wanted to be around him. I suspect they’re still at it wherever they are together now.
Sparky’s idea about a horn or some sort of bell might work, and so might having a few cat toys on you to throw for her to chase but otherwise you’re just going to have to be very very careful.

Mine were rushing down the staris in front of me all the time, and I started making shhshhhshhhshh sounds like the outside street sweeper (they hate the city’s street sweeper) as I went down. It made a difference. You can do a certain sound or word when you move, warning the cat. To train them to NOT come near you when you move and make the sound, have a fly swatter in your hand and slap at the cat’s side. It’ll be enough to startle the cat, and hopefully train him to stay away when you say that word a few times.

i would use the spray bottle with water in it. seems like there is nothing else you can do. i have used it many times to stop a dog from barking etc. and of course it doesn’t hurt them.
