Walkers, have they decided they are bad or good for babies yet?
I have seen several posts on here saying that walkers are bad for babies. Are they for sure saying that (do you have a link) or is it just something someone said? I haven't seen anything on the news or net about this. My little one seems like she might be ready for one. I haven't decided to get a walker or push toy yet. Give me your opinions!
Thanks!

She's 9 months old and pulling to stand and taking 1-2 steps.

I've read articles that discourage them, other articles that say they're fine as long as you take safety precautions. If your daughter is pulling to stand and taking a couple of steps, I would go straight to the push-toy. She'll be walking in a matter of days or weeks here, no need for the walker at this point.

In general, most experts now say that walkers are dangerous, as there have been many accidents with them over the years. However, as with anything else, if your child is closely supervised while using one and any doorways to staircases are closed off, there is nothing wrong with using one. My son is almost 10 months and uses one — he loves to chase me all over the kitchen while I cook or clean up. Sometimes he does run over his own toes, and cries for a second, but generally he gets over it quickly and has never seriously hurt himself.

A nurse at my hospital told me Pediatricians hate walkers. One main reason is they can tip over and result in head or other potentially serious injuries. I personally would feel better about a push toy.

I would wait on buying a walker until you talk to your child’s doctor about it first.

they arent bad, we all had them as kids. its probably just another over done thing where people think they know everything or believe what they hear and have to spread false information lol they are perfectly fine. people are always trying to find problems with everything. if you want one get one seriously they dont hurt anything.

My mom used to put me in one all the time and we only had one little problem! Don’t use them on a hill, it could end badly! Once when my mom and dad were out on a date night and left we with a sitter she wasn’t paying enough attention to me, I went down the driveway(hill), flipped over a couple cement steps, and ended up in the hospital. I got maybe 3 stitches under my nose. All I can say is avoid hills! Inside the house sounds safe enough to me, but I’m not a mom or know the latest details about baby items. See if they ever had a recall and for why.

In my opinion, skip the walker. I’d recommend the V-Tech Sit To Stand Push Walker. It’s much sturdier than most, and my daughter loved it. If you want something for her to sit in, I’d suggest an exercauser.

    bad and dangerous

I am wondering the same. I see nothing wrong with them. I used them on my two older son when they were baby. And they did fine on them. They walking fine and things. My house is carpet. Right now I have a 7 and half month old girl. She getting bored with things she has now. I am thinking about getting her a walker and I always keep an eye on my kids when they were in walkers swing bouncer or anything.

I am new to this section, so grant me some leeway here… It seems to me the walkers are only unsafe if used improperly or when you are not supervising the kid. Do your job as a parent and you should be fine.

Also, I’m not exactly understanding how if a walker is so unsafe, then a push toy would be any better. I mean the kid can still fall and hit his head with a push toy, or if not watched push the toy and himself down the stairs.

Love to hear some thoughts on that one as well. Thanks for asking!

My son was uninterested in one. He actually just wanted to stand on top of it and play with the toys. Total waste of money.

My daughter has been using her walker since she was like 4 months. She LOVES it. She runs all around the house (its all tile floors). It has not bowed my daughters lets at all, in fact it has encouraged her start wanting to walk and pull herself up. I think walkers are great!

Timid Woman heard correctly. Most of us pediatricians dislike walkers because we have seen our share of accidents, some serious. Some accidents are the result of neglect as when a baby pushes the walker down the stairs, but others are less predictable, as when one collapses and pinches the fingers or hand.

From a theoretical standpoint, walkers emphasize use of the legs and hips at a time in development when the infant should be exercising and strengthening the arms and shoulders.

Sure, it’s cute to watch babies toddle around behind a walker, but walkers disrupt the natural order of development, and that may be bad for some children.

I used one for my daughter and she started walking at 7-8 months! She loved it. We didn’t get a push toy until she was 1. We have all hard wood floors in our house and she wouldn’t have been able to push the toy. It would have flown out of her hands.
